EMSIV Erasmus+ Project: visiting the Chuon Ngo mother-of-pearl inlay craft village in Chuyen My commune, 12 September 2025

On 12th of September 2025, following the Project meeting held in Lao Cai City at Thai Nguyen University Campus, the Management Board of Hanoi Industrial Zones and Processing & Export Areas, partner of EMSIV Project, organized a visit to Chuon Ngo mother-of-pearl inlay craft village in Chuyen My commune, Phu Xuyen district of Hanoi. With centuries of history, Chuon Ngo is a traditional nacre inlay village in Hanoi’s Phu Xuyen District. Their products are unique because the mother-of-pearl pieces fit perfectly into the wood surfaces, creating flat inlays with exquisite lines. Like many Vietnamese traditional craft villages, Chuon Ngo nacre inlay has gone through ups and downs, especially with the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic. However, its quintessence is still preserved by the artisans and their love for the craft is passed on to their descendants. The EMSIV Project delegation spoke and interact with the locals, allowing us to increase the local needs, understanding their issues, and how different local, regional or global facts affect their lives and neighbourhoods. Visiting traditional areas in Vietnam is not just about visiting but also better understand the need of preservation of global diversity and traditions.
